Red Shudei Tokoname Teapot

Handcrafted at a family-run kiln in Tokoname, Japan, this collectible side-handle kyusu showcases the rich, natural texture of the region’s iconic red shudei clay. A built-in ceramesh clay filter allows for a smooth, controlled pour.

Our team selected this yokode kyusu at Gyokko Kiln during our 2025 visit to Tokoname, Japan. Led by second-generation potter Hirotaka Umehara, Gyokko is a family-run kiln specializing in traditional teaware crafted for comfort and ease of use.

This unglazed kyusu’s rounded body and wide mouth give leafy teas ample room to unfurl and make clean-up easy. Its built-in ceramesh filter allows for a clean, graceful pour, while its unglazed clay surface offers balanced heat retention and a subtly porous texture suited to refined tea preparation.

To maintain purity of flavor, we recommend reserving this teaware for green or oolong teas.
