About this product
Translating to "treasure jar" or "magical jar", the Hohin is a traditional teapot that is designed to offer a deep appreciation of the umami flavor, rich mouthfeel, and lovely jade color of Japanese Gyokuro. The Hohin is designed without a handle, making it suitable for teas like Gyokuro that require a lower water temperature for infusion. The spout has a ceramic filter inside to strain most of the tealeaves. It is perfectly acceptable, however, to allow some of the finer Gyokuro tea leaves to flow through into the cup. This adds to the luscious body and rich mouthfeel of high-grade Gyokuro.

Somewhat loose tolerance on lid closure, but otherwise good.

Service and delivery were excellent. Product itself is good but had a few issues on the first go-round. Heating to 76ºC, the hohin was very uncomfortably hot to hold - and I have a higher heat tolerance than most of my fellow baristi. I used one full tablespoon of kabusecha. Presoaked with room temp water, then did quickpour after decanting initial water. The lid sits OK, but barely holds a tight enough seal, so leaves end up migrating to the rim between the lid, and can get quite messy. The second time, i used level tablespoon of tea and the results were, though still had leaf migration but to a lesser degree and pouring was a bit easier. Kabusecha swells significantly due to water ingress, so a full tablespoon can easily be an excessive dose, choking up the hohin resulting in significant flow restriction. Otherwise the integrated ceramic filter allows for significant particle matter which punches up the body and mouthfeel of the tea, and really lets that full umami aspect shine. I normally use a side handle kyusu, also a bit larger in capacity, and brewing with that is nearly effortless. All in all, it's good, - just requires a calibrating the recipe a little and some effort, but the results are worth it. It will do justice to any high grade tea green tea you provide.

Little small, but right size for a cup of tea

Little small, but love that no other filter is needed. Has it right in it. Pours nicely without drips. I’m not a huge fan of the unglazed lip. It makes a scratchy sound when you set the lid down on the base.

    New friend

I'm glad to have finally added this new friend to my collection. I had wanted one some time ago and they weren't available. So glad I opted to have Rishi contact me when they became available because I love this little treasure jar. The size is perfect so I don't have to do any additional measuring; just heat my water and fill. The porcelain is absolutely beautiful and it feels great in my had when pouring. This hohin is perfect for the higher grade Japanese green teas when you want to include some of the smaller leaf particals for that silky mouthfeel. Thank you Rishi, I absolutely love this!
