Darjeeling is regarded as the “Champagne of Tea” due to its one-of-a-kind terroir. Set high in the Himalayas, each garden and slope section in Darjeeling carries its own signature terroir, fragrance and flavor characteristics. While cultivar selection is a factor, the real complexity of Darjeeling teas is best explored through terroir. Differences in elevation, slope grade and sun exposure all contribute to distinctive variations in character.

The Chamong gardens are located in southern Darjeeling, in the Rongbong Valley next to Selimbong, and were originally planted in the 1870s. These gardens boast incredible biodiversity and are set along hillsides ranging from 1150–1850 meters above sea level. Towering deciduous forests surround the area and provide habitat for many monkey tribes.
