An artfully crafted, brilliant green matcha brimming with dewy sweetness and savory umami
Hailed for its elegant savory sweetness, creamy texture and enlivening energy, this organic tencha matcha powder is crafted from the first tender leaves to emerge in Kagoshima’s volcanic tea gardens each spring. Our longtime partners use traditional shading techniques to produce brilliant green leaves rich in chlorophyll and L-theanine, an amino acid that awakens a relaxed yet alert state of mind.
Crafted with a blend of unique tencha cultivars selected for optimal flavor and vibrant energy, this matcha is beautifully suited for chanoyu, the Zen-based ceremony that began centuries ago in Japanese teahouses. This Teahouse Matcha is also equally at home in the modern café, blended with milk or other teas to build complex, elevated drinks.

Traditional Preparation
Using an Everyday Matcha Sifter, sift 1 tsp (1.5g) into a tea bowl.
Add 2.5 oz (75ml) water at 160°F.
Whisk until creamy and foamy with a bamboo chasen (whisk).
Our Favorite Way to Enjoy
Whisk Teahouse Matcha with water to appreciate its full profile, or use it for iced matcha and a lightly sweetened latte. As tencha matcha, it can also be combined with Japanese sencha for a layered cup of creamy body and structured leaf-tea character.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is tencha matcha powder?
Tencha matcha powder is finely milled from refined tencha leaves. Tencha is dried without rolling, then separated from its stems and veins before milling.
What’s the difference between culinary matcha versus ceremonial matcha?
“Ceremonial matcha” is a common term outside Japan, but defining it is too nuanced for consensus or a set standard. In general, the delineation speaks to overall taste profile and texture, but those differences often broadbrush over other important factors, such as terroir, preparation method and personal preference.
Can I still perform a tea ceremony with this Teahouse Matcha?
Absolutely! Rishi uses Teahouse Matcha to honor teahouse traditions. Read more about the art of Japanese tea sessions from Japanese tea master Ryo Iwamoto, who walks tea lovers through each step and how to use each tool.
What should I know when comparing tencha vs. sencha?
The biggest distinction between tencha matcha and sencha is in how the tea is grown, processed and ultimately prepared.
Tencha matcha is the raw material from which matcha is made: it’s shade-grown, dried without rolling and refined for milling into matcha. Sencha is steamed, rolled and dried as a leaf tea, then infused and strained. It’s typically enjoyed as in its leaf form, not milled into matcha powder.
