How to Brew Low-Caffeine Teas

Preparation methods can vary by product, so we recommend referencing each tea’s product page for specific brewing instructions. As a general guide for loose leaf teas, use approximately 1.5 tablespoons per 12 ounces of hot water to achieve a full, balanced infusion. Most teas in this collection steep well between 180–200℉ for 3–5 minutes, depending on the style and desired strength.

Powders—such as Sweet Thai Tea Powder—can typically be combined with water and whisked until well combined.

FAQs

Find out more about low and medium-caffeine teas to determine whether they’re the right choice for your daily brewing ritual.

Medium levels of caffeine typically mean a single serving of tea has about 26 mg of caffeine. Anything under 20 mg of caffeine is considered low. High-caffeine teas, including English Breakfast and Masala Chai, typically range between 60 mg and 180 mg of caffeine per cup.

We would recommend caffeine-free tea if you suffer from acid reflux, as even decaf options may still trigger symptoms. However, you should speak to your doctor about which types of low-caffeine tea may be safe for you to consume.

The factors that influence the amount of caffeine present in tea include the age of the leaves, water temperature and steeping time. Younger leaves naturally contain higher levels of caffeine, while hotter water and longer steeping durations increase the amount extracted into the cup.
