Arita Shincha Asatsuyu

Asatsuyu means “morning dew”—an apt name for this organic micro-lot shincha from Kyushu Island. Grown in volcanic soil and harvested in early spring, it yields a vivid green infusion with smooth umami depth and a fresh, lustrous finish.

About 18 Cups Of Tea

Spring dew, lustrous green jade infusion, rich umami and minerality

About This Tea
Asatsuyu means “morning dew” and is an original cultivar developed in the 1950s. This micro-lot of Asatsuyu is the first batch of the spring season from the Arita tea garden, located in southern Japan’s Kyushu Island, south of Kagoshima and Mount Kirishima, where many of our organic teas are farmed.

The Arita tea makers specialize in organic tea cultivation and take great pride in their soil management. The black volcanic soil found in this region contributes to both the rich taste and vivid green color of the tea. To accentuate the original Asatsuyu cultivar’s deep green and lustrous spring character, we applied minimal hika (light roast).

Kyushu Island, Japan

Kagoshima Prefecture is located at the southwest tip of Kyushu (the third largest island of Japan) and is largely mountainous and home to important lumber, fishing and agriculture industries. Much like the rest of Japan, this region has well manicured tea gardens with well-developed irrigation, and farmers follow strict growing procedures to produce this perfect tea bush shape and size.
