About This Product
Add a touch of the extraordinary to your matcha ceremony with this artisanal 80-prong chasen, imported directly from Takayama in Nara, Japan. Takayama chasen masters Takehiro and Sachiko Kubo make each whisk by hand, continuing this 500-year-old craft tradition while raising their two small children.
Takehiro, who mastered chasen-making under the guidance of his grandfather, learned to discern the quality of his work by sound. “When I first started, my grandfather listened to the sounds I made while working. It was the sound of the knife hitting the bamboo as I carved it, and he would sometimes say, ‘That sound was great!’ Even now, there are days when I’m not satisfied with the sound, so I want to make sure there are no inconsistencies between good and bad days.”
Sachiko, Takehiro’s wife, worked as a bus tour guide before learning the art of whisk-making. “I was very torn because that job was also appealing, but my dream changed to making chasen together with my husband.”
Each chasen begins as a single piece of hachiku (white bamboo), harvested after two to three years of growth, then dried and seasoned naturally for another two years. After this lengthy curing process, Mr. and Ms. Kubo hand-carve the bamboo in small batches in the classical shin kazuho style of Japanese whisk crafting.
Featuring evenly spaced tines and balanced, symmetrical proportions, this chasen makes it easy to create a thick, silky foam quickly and with remarkable consistency.
Hard to find, rarely exported and crafted with exceptional care, this traditional chasen invites you to experience the art of matcha preparation, just as it’s been practiced for centuries.

Best Storage Practices:
This chasen is sensitive to artificial temperature changes, including air conditioning. We recommend storing it in a place away from direct airflow.
Avoid pressing the chasen against the bottom of a tea bowl, as the tips are delicate. Gentle care will help extend the longevity of this handcrafted piece. This chasen is not dishwasher safe. After use, rinse the whisk with hot water and allow it to dry naturally before storing it in a dry area, away from direct sunlight, high humidity and extreme temperatures. The recommended humidity level for storage is between 40% and 80%.
