Crafted without using glaze to highlight the natural coloring of the clay and featuring a clay mesh sasame filter, this type of teapot is suitable for a variety of teas.

About This Product
At the Gyokko 玉光 studio in Tokoname, second-generation artisan Mr. Hirotaka Umehara handcrafts teapots using the potter’s wheel. Tokoname, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, is renowned not only for its ceramic heritage but also for its deep ties to Buddhist and Shinto artistry. Often considered the sister city to Yixing, Tokoname has a long-standing tradition of fine teaware. This teapot is left unglazed to showcase the natural hues and textures of the clay. It features a built-in clay mesh sasame filter, making it ideal for brewing a range of teas—especially premium sencha and gyokuro. Because of the clay’s porous nature, we recommend dedicating this teapot to a single type of tea for the best flavor experience over time.

    Loveliest Teapot

    This morning I tried this teapot for the first time. It is already my favorite. The feeling of the unglazed clay as you gently grasp the handle to pour is so satisfying. The tea steeps happily with adequate space and the mesh strainer works perfectly. The teapot encourages serial steepings of the leaves because it is so lovely to handle. And rinses out beautifully to complete the ritual. This is truly a delightful teapot.
