About This Tea
A bright and lively Uji Sencha with aromatic accents of flowers and alpine herbs, this tea features a rich umami taste and a lasting aromatic finish. While deep and super rich with umami, Asanoka is slightly bittersweet. The layers of flavor, coupled with its fresh aroma and abundant umami sweetness, strike a refreshing balance. This Uji Sencha is highly stimulating, aromatic, and strong. This batch is lightly steamed to capture and convey the essence of the Asanoka cultivar grown amongst the mountains and rivers of the Uji region.
Ujitawara is one of the original and ancient growing regions of tea in Japan with a rich history of tea culture. Known as the birthplace of sencha, it is where the techniques for producing sencha were refined in the 18th century. The town's historical connection to tea cultivation makes it a vital part of Japan's tea heritage. Ujitawara tea farmers were instrumental in developing the steaming method of processing tea leaves, which is essential for producing sencha. This method helps preserve the vibrant green color and fresh flavor of the leaves. Tea from Ujitawara is renowned for its high quality and rich umami taste, with the region’s climate and soil contributing to a unique flavor and aroma highly sought after by sencha lovers.
The name "Asanoka" means "morning fragrance" and was inspired by its distinctive and refreshing aroma that is unlike other Japanese tea bush varieties. Asanoka is a hybrid tea variety created by crossing "Yabukita" with "CP1," a Chinese cultivar. It was developed in Kagoshima Prefecture and officially registered as a Japanese cultivar in 1996. Today, it is cultivated in different areas of Japan to produce sencha and matcha. Asanoka is characterized by its glossy jade green color and well-pigmented stems, which emit a strong and refreshing fragrance that is crisp, heady, and floral.
