About 18 Cups Of Tea

Bittersweet, creamy, snap pea, mochi, alpine freshness

About this tea
The Okawa region of Shizuoka, Japan lies in the upper stream of the Warashina River. The Zen monk Shoichi Kokushi was born here and introduced tea seeds to the Okawa region in 1244. Okawa is one of the most revered and oldest Hon Yama Sencha producing villages. It is also one of the highest elevation tea farming areas in all of Japan and is famous for its elegant, deep-tasting, and aromatic sencha.

The high mountain region of Okawa is surrounded by dense forests, clear air, and pure river streams. The tea gardens are fed by sweeping clouds and mists from the Japanese Alps.

Our friend and producer in Okawa, Rikio-san, lives in a remote area of Okawa at a higher elevation. Situated above most of the region’s tea farms, it is the perfect place for organic tea. His home and several tea gardens are located within natural forest buffer zones that shroud the area from industrial pollution. Rikio-san mainly produces classic Hon Yama Sencha.

Based on Rikio-san’s artisan farming skills and unique tea terroir, we commissioned this special batch of high mountain Hon Yama Sencha. This micro-lot was harvested in the spring and aged in the mountains for several months. We recommend brewing this tea in a Hohin to fully savor its creamy mouthfeel and notes of snap pea, mochi, and alpine freshness.

    Not my favorite

I bought 2 packages of the Rikio-san Hon Yama Sencha and 1 pkg of M's Fukamushi Kabuse Sencha and I much prefer the Kabuse. I find the Hon Yama is not bright green and has a more bitter, stem taste. It is best when carefully prepared according to the proper temp and steeping time, but still not as good as the Kabuse.

Hi Kathy! We really appreciate you trying our Rikio-san's Hon Yama Sencha and understand that tea preferences can be very personal, especially when comparing different sencha styles. We're glad to hear you found a favorite with M's Fukamushi Kabuse Sencha! The Hon Yama does have a more traditional profile, we recommend brewing with a kyusu teapot or hohin to savor its mouthfeel and notes. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our Customer Service Team at hello@rishi-tea.com - we'd love to help with brewing recommendations to bring out the best in this special offering.

    Very good.

Just had placed a huge tea order but would have definitely ordered a second 100 grams had I experienced this first 100 gram packet. It takes time to really get to know a tea, and often by then it's all gone. The tea gave three good infusions, the second being the best. Lovely color, scent, and flavor. Good umami. The three servings left me satisfied -- a lovely tea buzz....gentle but definite and lingering. I've been too liberal with five star ratings, so to me four stars is very, very good. This tea was an excellent recommendation to me from Rishi!
