Cultivar: Ruanzhi "Soft Stem" Oolong Cultivar (a strain of Qingxin)
Harvest Season: October 2015

Ruby Oolong is a special type of oolong tea produced in the Doi Mae Salong mountainous region in northern Thailand. This full-bodied oolong tea is deeply oxidized and slowly baked to bring out complex layers of cacao, raisins, and black cherry with a sublime, elegant structure. The soil in northern Thailand is soft and loamy, providing a concentration of nutrients not found in other oolong tea origins. This lends a unique sweetness and rich viscosity in mouthfeel. Ruby Oolong is an excellent introduction to the world of oolong tea with its deliciously sweet caramelized fruit and chocolate aromas that permeate the air as soon as it is brewed.
Experience the growing and crafting of Ruby Oolong with our Doi Mae Salong Travelogue.

Tasting Notes: Named for its brilliant red infusion, this full-bodied, deeply fermented oolong is slow baked to bring out complex layers of cacao, raisins and black cherry.

Ingredients: Organic oolong tea

Doi Mae Salong, Thailand
Guywan Brewing Guidelines:
Water Temperature: 195°F
Leaf to Water Ratio: Fill 25% of a porcelain guywan with tea
Steep Times: 1st infusion 1 minute, 2nd infusion 20 seconds, 3rd infusion 50 seconds, subsequent infusions about 2 minutes

Standard Brewing Guidelines:
Water Temperature: 195°F
Leaf to Water Ratio: 1 tablespoon per 8 ounces
Steep Times: 3 minutes (1st infusion), 4 minutes (2nd infusion), 5 minutes (3rd infusion)

We encourage you to experiment with the quantity of tea leaves and the length of the steep time to find your desired brew strength. Varying the water temperature isn't recommended, as water that is too hot will over-extract the bitter components of tea, while water that is too cool might not fully draw out the aromas and flavors of tea.

I don't have tea vocabulary, but this tea is my favorite 4:00 tea. I really missed it when I was away, and when I got home, it was like returning to a dear friend.

Submitted prior in error before finished! I have become a serious tea lover because of Rishi. Having sampled many of their teas, this has become my favorite. It has no bitterness, and so much flavor that I steep it 5 or more times (when I have the time). It never loses it's savour, but becomes milder and sweeter. Much more yummy than Iron Goddess.

A lovely aroma, negligible tannins, delicious. Use less than the recommended amount - 1 tsp/cup is perfect, not 1 tbl.

This is my favorite tea. Its almost impossible to over-brew or to scortch the tea. It makes amazing hot and cold tea and is amazing gong fu style. This is the perfect tea for any occasion.

I really like the ball rolled Ruby Oolong tea and I can get three to five cups with one serving. In the afternoon, the Ruby Oolong offers me great flavor and it's a nice pick-me-up for the day.

This tea was a wonderful surprise. I avoided it for some time, thinking it would be too strong for my taste, until one day I decided to try the teaser. I'm glad that I did try it, as it has become one of my favorites. The taste is complex and unique among the more robust oolongs. I highly recommend this tea.

Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Does it have caffeine
By Ty on July 7, 2015

What is the caffeine content?
Owner Response: Hello Ty - Yes Ruby Oolong has some caffeine. It is a true tea made from Camellia sinensis, the tea plant. All types of true tea contain some caffeine. We have not measured the caffeine content of Ruby Oolong but we guess it has somewhere between 1/3 - 1/2 the amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee. A cup of coffee has about 90 - 120 mg / 8 ounces. Tea in general contains about 30 - 50 mg / 8 ounces. We hope you enjoy Ruby Oolong. -Rishi

An excellent and affordable dark Oolong, and the only tea I've ever had from Thailand. Deep dark roasty toasty baked bread and dried fruit flavors. Keeps giving for 3-5 infusions depending on your steeping time.
