This micro-lot of organic Oriental Beauty Oolong was hand-made by a third generation oolong tea artisan in Doi Mae Salong in northern Thailand. Only a very limited amount of this extraordinary tea was made. Oriental Beauty is specialized style of Bai Hao Oolong that is made only when the green tea leafhopper visits tea gardens during the summer and autumn. This small green aphid draws some of the sweet juices out of tender new growth on the tea bushes. After just a few days in the gardens, the leafhoppers disappear. The leafhoppers do not harm the bushes enough to cause significant damage. Rather, they simply draw some of the juice in the tea buds to the surface of the tea leaves where it is exposed to oxygen. This initiates the polyphenolic oxidation process that happens to all tea leaves when they are picked from the bush. In the case of Oriental Beauty, however, that process begins while the tea buds are still growing on the tea bushes. The effect is to provide a very slow and drawn out oxidation process that creates a gorgeous range of color, including hues of purple, red, brown, white and amber. Often called the "five color oolong," Oriental Beauty is characterized by a luscious, honey-like sweetness and wildly complex floral and fruity aromas.

Tasting Notes: Handcrafted by an expert oolong master in the Doi Mae Salong, this Dongfang Meiren is inexplicably complex with exotic sweet aromas of wildflower honey and pipa (loquat) fruit.

Notwithstanding that this oolong deviates from the horizontal typicity of oolongs in general, the buttery French toast with agave nectar aromas and delicate lychee on the palate makes this smooth finishing tea a true beauty.

This is a very fruity and light summery oolong. I may become bored with it in due course, but for now, this is one of my favourites. You have a fruity sweetness (not overpowering, but nevertheless present), you have shades of something like earl grey (i.e. the reminder that this is something approaching a black tea), and you have the fresh kick of a younger green tea. I was surprised about the timings advised to brew this one, but actually they worked out well. This is a complex tea. I couldn't quite place it among the other Oolongs that I know. It's more complex than just the Oolong label would suggest. I do know, though, that I'll be drinking this one for a while to come.
