On the go? Check out our Masala Chai Tea Bags.

Literally "mixed spiced tea," Masala Chai is a classic style of black tea blended with traditional spices native to South and Southeast Asia. The tea base consists of a robust and malty Assam balanced with our new, lively Orange Pekoe from northern Thailand. Our recipe is unapologetically spicy yet balanced, highlighting aromatic Guatemalan cardamom, hot and citrusy ginger, and sweet cinnamon, with accents of pungent cracked black pepper and fragrant cloves. Designed to be brewed both straight up and via stovetop simmered the traditional way in water and milk often with a touch of sweetness.

Tasting Notes: A robust, full-bodied black tea blended with aromatic traditional Indian masala spices

Ingredients: Organic black tea, organic cinnamon, organic cardamom, organic ginger root, organic black pepper, organic cloves.

Additional Info: Masala Chai, or "mixed-spice tea," is a rich spiced tea latte traditional to South Asia. We source and curate the finest teas, herbs and spices at peak season, which are chopped, crushed or ground to release their essential characters and combined in micro-batch blends to harmonize for flavor complexity.

Rishi Tea Blend
Mix 2 tbsp chai, 1 cup water, and 1 cup milk in a saucepan. Bring to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in sugar or sweetener to taste. Strain into a mug or pitcher and enjoy! Chai can also be enjoyed over ice.

We encourage you to experiment with the quantity of tea leaves and the length of the steep time to find your desired brew strength. Varying the water temperature isn't recommended, as water that is too hot will over-extract the bitter components of tea, while water that is too cool might not fully draw out the aromas and flavors of tea.
Chai Flan

"This Chai Flan is one of my favorite versions of flan because it connects ancient cultures. I am able to make the recipes I grew up making with my mom in our Mexican kitchen while being raised in America and now using my new found love for tea and the different cultures it has introduced me to, such as India."

—Susana Mojica

Ingredients:

Flan:
5 Cage Free Vegetarian fed eggs
3 cups of organic whole milk (Organic Valley works very well)
1/2 cup of sugar
6 tablespoons of Rishi Organic Masala Chai, dry

Caramel:
Enough sugar to cover a deep skillet, about 2 cups

Making the Caramel:
Pour an even layer of sugar into a deep skillet. Cook over low heat. As soon as sugar starts liquefying around the outer edges, gently bring towards the middle with a heat- withstanding spatula. Monitor closely to avoid burning. Do not over stir.

Once sugar has liquefied into caramel, immediately coat the entire baking dish or ramekins evenly.

Making the Flan:
Combine milk and dry chai and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature to a simmer. After ten minutes, add 1/2cup of sugar, then simmer an additional five minutes. Strain tealeaves and spices, reserving two cups of brewed chai.

Beat eggs, adding one at a time.

Slowly add brewed chai to the beaten eggs and mix well.

Pour mixture into caramel coated dish or ramekins.

Place baking dish or ramekins into a larger pan. Add water to fill halfway up sides of outer pan.

Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 minutes.

Let cool and place in refrigerator for 4 hours. Once set, flip onto a plate and enjoy!

I've been ordering this consistently for several years, 'nuff said. If you like real Indian Chai, not that awful cinnamon stuff masquerading as chai, order Rishi's masala Chai.

I tried Masala Chai and it's OK, I will probably continue to order it. I don't think it's too spicy, but I still miss the perfection of the Green Tea Chai - too bad it was discontinued.
Owner Response: Thanks for your feedback! We'll definitely share internally and potentially re-introduce in the future.

I've recently decided to pur aside coffee for tea. I still need a morning ritual drink to get things going and have found chai tea to be the answer. The complex taste and spices that make up Masala Chai really satisfies me. I add just a bit of half and half and I don't even miss coffee.

Loved this tea for so long and Whole Foods stopped carrying it where we live. Went directly to the source and couldn't be happier.

Masala Chai has the unique, just right, combinations of spice and tea, warming the heart and soul with the richness of organic goodness and great taste! Made in the traditional recipe of masala chai spices, it is packed with flavor. Masala Chai is my favorite go to tea every morning. I boil it on the stove with a little sugar and milk and then pour it right into my Rishi insulated stainless steel travel mug to enjoy on my way to work. Rishi makes amazing teas and I like all of them. Masala Chai is my very favorite and a great tea to enjoy daily and to serve to friends when they come visit.

I love spicy (not too sweet) chai and this one is the best I've had. I'm often disappointed in the bland flavor of chai blends - weak tea and not enough spice - but this one has a good kick to it and the tea itself comes through as well. I'll be enjoying this chai all winter long. Thanks!

I still think Chai tea is the best I have found so far. However the tea is getting more powdery. The formula has changed. Do you still add Cardamon? It was missing from my last batch.I'm reordering, in hopes it was just a bad batch.
Owner Response: Hi Kathleen, Thank you for your review! In 2015, Masala Chai underwent a change that included transitioning cardamom pods to seeds and Yunnan black tea to an Assam black tea. Through the transition we hoped to create an even more traditional chai blend showcasing not only spices, but also the base tea itself. In short, we've had similar feedback and decided to move back to a fuller leaf black tea from our new partner farm in Thailand, Doi Mae Salong. We hope you enjoy! -Rishi

This tea used to be my favorite. the best chai i had ever tasted, in fact. So great that I splurged to buy a whole pound for myself. rishi must have changed the recipe and it is now INCREDIBLY spicy. coming from someone who enjoys spicy chai, this tea is overbearing. the spicy element is so strong that it makes any other flavor unable to show. I am very very disappointed in this change... bring back the old blend!
Owner Response: Brighid, Thanks for the feedback. Sorry to scorch you ... The spice is meant to be strong enough to stand up to traditional chai walla style brewing with milk and sugar. All the best - Rishi team

I can't put my finger on it, but this has changed. Recently, every brew I make is much spicier and less balanced than the masala chai used to be. I hope Rishi cuts down on the spice, hopefully returning to the previous blend.
Owner Response: Thanks for the feedback Rich.

Rishi Masala Chai is undoubtedly the best chai tea on the market! I've tried many brands and purchased many cups at coffee/tea cafes, and this one is the absolute best! I like it hot, steamed with coconut milk and honey!

Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon No Milk or Sweetener
By Smith on March 14, 2015

The flavor of this tea really worried me before I purchased it... The brewing guide only spoke of stove-top prep (5 minutes of simmering). I kind of figured the tea would only be good prepared this way as many spiced chai have flavoring / oils in them. Although I like it prepared with milk and sweetener on the stove, it was not what I was looking for.

That said I think it is a great cup of tea. Spicy, simple, and clean flavor. Easily get over 9 servings the way I have been making it. (Steep about 1.5-2 tsp a cup of boiling water. No simmering. Steep 5 or so minutes.)

The black tea is a little fine, so this may slip through some infusers. Though this doesn't bother me.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GUY WHO GAVE THIS TWO STARS. this chai tea is phenomenal. I hardly ever drink anything other than Japanese green teas, but this is one exception in the winter time. I'm no expert on chai tea but I do know tea extremely well and this one is just the bees neez. It is incredibly spicy. When you add just a bit of sweetener (not sugar), it creates the best contrast between spicy/sweet. It's a great experience. JUST BUY IT. You will love it.

Its okay if you love cinnamon. The old formula had cinnamon as the 4th ingredient. Now it is second. As soon as I opened the package I new it was different. The tea it self wasn't even as black as the previous formula. Ihave been to India and this isn't even close. Where I visited, they didn't even use cinnamon. I poured what I made down the drain & gave the loose tea away. You have lost a customer until you bring back the old Masala Chai! Poor, poor quality!
