A 2017 Garden Direct Series exclusive! This impressive collection features seasonal micro-lots of single-origin teas we source and import directly from artisan tea farmers. Available for a limited time, these handcrafted teas were selected through real time micro-lot tea cuppings during our 2017 origin travels.

This micro-lot of organic Hong Shui Oolong was hand-made by a third generation oolong tea artisan in Doi Mae Salong in northern Thailand. Only a very limited amount of this extraordinary tea was made. Explore our Doi Mae Salong Travelogue to learn more about our 2017 trip to Thailand.

Tasting Notes: Handcrafted by an expert oolong master in the Doimaesalong, this Hong Shui Oolong has a rich red infusion with an elegant, supple structure and wondrous aromas of red wine grape skins, milk chocolate, and violets.

Ingredients: Organic oolong tea

Guywan Brewing Guidelines:
Water Temperature: 200°F
Leaf to Water Ratio: Fill 25% of a porcelain guywan with tea
Steep Times: 1st infusion 1 minute, 2nd infusion 20 seconds, 3rd infusion 50 seconds, subsequent infusions about 2 minutes

Standard Brewing Guidelines:
Water Temperature: 200°F
Leaf to Water Ratio: 1 tablespoon per 8 ounces
Steep Times: 3 minutes (1st infusion), 4 minutes (2nd infusion), 5 minutes (3rd infusion)

We encourage you to experiment with the quantity of tea leaves and the length of the steep time to find your desired brew strength. Varying the water temperature isn't recommended, as water that is too hot will over-extract the bitter components of tea, while water that is too cool might not fully draw out the aromas and flavors of tea.

Being a big fan of the Cui Yu cultivar, I knew I had to purchase this tea. Very flavorful. The structure of the tea is very interesting: In visuals it reminds me of a garden that has many different colored flowers. Not a boring tea by any means. Interesting, and tasty. Another winner from Thailand.

I used my glass simple brew pot for this tea so the leaves could open and expand more freely. This tea, as well as the others in the micro lot, is truer to the taste I remember for an oolong and delicious hot or cold. It is very economical given the multiple infusions you are able to coax fro the leaves. I got 4 but had to stop because i was running late for work. I probably could have done 1 or 2 more and still had a strong brew.
