Harvest Date: March 13, 2020
Cultivar: Ruan Zhi
Dong Fang Hong, "Eastern Beauty Red," is a newer style of tea that combines oolong and red tea processing methods. Our partners in Doi Mae Salong produced this distinctive spring micro-lot of tea using the Ruan Zhi cultivar for its intense aromatic potential. The first two tender leaves and a bud are full of flavor and energy only present in spring harvests. These are the same Ruan Zhi cultivar bushes that make our Ruby Oolong, but through differing plucking standards and extended processing, we see a unique biochemical presentation.
To create the Dong Fang Hong, the tea leaves are tumbled in the yaoqing and left to wither and oxidize for a longer time. Each infusion possesses a vibrant Qi (energy), as this cultivar is known for high caffeine levels. The coppery infusion tastes like wildflower honey and ripe peaches with subtle aromatic hints of wintergreen, white rose and tropical flowers.
