This traditional style of shu pu-erh offers an impressively robust infusion that is credited to our unique blend of vintages ranging from 2-4 years in age. One of the first teas to travel beyond its growing region from Yunnan to Tibet and Mongolia, pu-erh teas were typically compressed for ease of trade in exchange for horses and salt in ancient times. Today this compressed form is still used for convenience. Its complex personality is revealed over multiple infusions: smooth while robust, a bit sweet and a bit savory, mellow yet powerful. At about 5 grams per tuo cha, each is designed to brew a single serving size.

Tasting Notes: Traditional style Pu-erh with a robust, soothing flavor and sweet notes of dark mocha

Ingredients: Organic pu-erh tea.

Additional Info: Pu-erh tea has an ancient past originating in Yunnan, China millennia ago. This rare, rich tasting tea is treasured as a healthful, energizing tonic. Its deep, smooth flavor is created through an artisanal pile fermentation process that transforms sun-dried green tea into ripened, full-bodied Pu-erh tea.

This tea originates in Yunnan Province, China.
Guywan Brewing Guidelines:
Water Temperature: 200°F
Leaf to Water Ratio: Use one piece in the guywan
Steep Times: 1st infusion 1 minute, 2nd infusion 20 seconds, 3rd infusion 50 seconds, subsequent infusions about 2 minutes

Standard Brewing Guidelines:
Water: 212°F (boiling)
Leaf to Water Ratio: 1 piece per 8 ounces
Steep Time: 5 minutes (1st infusion), 6 minutes (2nd infusion)

We encourage you to experiment with the quantity of tea leaves and the length of the steep time to find your desired brew strength. Varying the water temperature isn't recommended, as water that is too hot will over-extract the bitter components of tea, while water that is too cool might not fully draw out the aromas and flavors of tea.

Went to a program and made a cup of tea. It was sooo good. I was able to use the ball 4 times and on the 4th cup, it was slightly weaker but still great.

The Pu-erh is one of my favorite go-to teas. Its rich flavor and inky color are very satisfying.

I am a supporter of the pu-erh classic, and this one is pretty good--it's not too different, but has just a hint of a change, that if you wanted to try something new, it would be a good choice. It comes as a one serving circle/brick, size of a quarter, and I will steep an extra half cup; someone else might steep more, but I like it darker. Full of flavor, but not too much different than the classic.

It had been awhile since I had had some Pu Erh. When I was younger, I didn't have much of a taste for it, but my aunt had just given me some money and I thought I would give it a try....it was amazing! If you can imagine the smell of a dense jungle, but as a flavor, that's pretty much what it tastes like. I purchased the quarter pound at first, then immediately went back and ordered a full pound. Luxurious, relaxing and reasonably priced, an all around win.

Seriously. I love, looove this tea. It's like a meal. So complex...Bold yet subtle, sweet but not sweet, savory but not savory... It's really hard to explain all I can really say is it warms my entire being. It's amazing. (Also... lately I've been using it as a base to add other flavors of tea to! Delicious.)

The subtle shifting of this Pu-erh is very gratifying. Each subsequent steeping seems to grow in buttery flavors without losing robustness. Be careful not to over steep....it has a tendency to deepen to fast if left in water. We were able to steep 5+ times without losing its integrity. The energetic qualities found in Pu-erhs are not lost on this varietal......we got a beautiful smooth body sensation of wholeness from drinking this tea without an edgy note. Great before QiGong. thanks for this Pu-erh!

Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Odd Smell
By Michael on October 1, 2013

This is the same person who wrote the last review. I have had the opportunity to let many of my friends try it and what they say is strange to me. The most common comment is that it smells like "fish food". I have to say for myself that it does have a particularly unpleasant smell to it but it is only when it's dry. You can smell it slightly when it's steeping but the flavor of the tea is quite unlike the smell. If you're serious about tea like myself then please don't let this scare you off. Out of all the friends that said this comment, all of them loved the flavor and had second cups. I hope this helps in your decision.
Owner Response: Hello Michael, Thank you very much for the addendum to your initial review. The unique smell associated with Pu-erh comes from the process that is applied to ferment the tea. While we haven't specifically thought that Tuo Cha smelled like "fish food", we absolutely appreciate your opinion and your expression.

This tea is number one in my top five favorites for black and darker teas. It really is a tea for someone who appreciates smooth, delicate yet surprisingly powerful tea. It is unlike anything I have tastes as far as tea goes and couldn't be happier to share my thoughts. Relaxing, smooth, powerful and sweet, this tea is sure to please and I highly recommend it.
