This classic, dark Tokoname tea bowl reveals a playful depth of character when you take a closer look. The glaze has a luminescence to it, a soft inviting glow on the inside, contrasting cleanly with the emerald green of freshly whisked matcha tea. The undertones of the rich coloring have a gentle, hair-fine streaking effect to them, very reminiscent of beloved 'hare's fur' glazing on tea bowls from the Song Dynasty, China. In fact, that's why we named this bowl Usagi no kegawa ('rabbit's fur,' in Japanese). During the Song, Japanese Buddhist monks traveled to China to study tea and meditation, and the artistry of crafting glazes such as this, along with methods for making powdered tea, were brought back to Japan with them. Thus, the ancient roots of the Japanese tea ceremony itself.
