This classic, compressed style of Pu-erh tea has a rich history stretching back centuries, when tea artisans in southwestern China and Southeast Asia produced Pu-erh teas that were pressed into bricks, cakes and tuo cha ("bowl tea") shapes durable enough for transport. This tea was traded by mule caravan across the "Ancient Tea & Horse Routes" to Tibet and Mongolia, where it became integral to local food cultures as an after-meal digestif and wellness tea. Pu-erh tea became a household staple used as a form of currency to trade for horses and salt.

Additional Info: Pu-erh tea has an ancient past originating in Yunnan, China millennia ago. This rare, rich tasting tea is treasured as a healthful, energizing tonic. Its deep, smooth flavor is created through an artisanal pile fermentation process that transforms sun-dried green tea into ripened, full-bodied Pu-erh tea.

Guywan Brewing Guidelines:
Water Temperature: 212°F (boiling)
Leaf to Water Ratio: Use one piece in the guywan
Steep Times: 1st infusion 1 minute, 2nd infusion 20 seconds, 3rd infusion 50 seconds, subsequent infusions about 2 minutes

Standard Brewing Guidelines:
Water: 212°F (boiling)
Leaf to Water Ratio: 1 piece per 8 ounces
Steep Time: 5 minutes (1st infusion), 6 minutes (2nd infusion)

We encourage you to experiment with the quantity of tea leaves and the length of the steep time to find your desired brew strength. Varying the water temperature isn't recommended, as water that is too hot will over-extract the bitter components of tea, while water that is too cool might not fully draw out the aromas and flavors of tea.

This tea is number one in my top five favorites for black and darker teas. It really is a tea for someone who appreciates smooth, delicate yet surprisingly powerful tea. It is unlike anything I have tastes as far as tea goes and couldn't be happier to share my thoughts. Relaxing, smooth, powerful and sweet, this tea is sure to please and I highly recommend it.

This is the same person who wrote the last review. I have had the opportunity to let many of my friends try it and what they say is strange to me. The most common comment is that it smells like "fish food". I have to say for myself that it does have a particularly unpleasant smell to it but it is only when it's dry. You can smell it slightly when it's steeping but the flavor of the tea is quite unlike the smell. If you're serious about tea like myself then please don't let this scare you off. Out of all the friends that said this comment, all of them loved the flavor and had second cups. I hope this helps in your decision.
Owner Response: Hello Michael, Thank you very much for the addendum to your initial review. The unique smell associated with Pu-erh comes from the process that is applied to ferment the tea. While we haven't specifically thought that Tuo Cha smelled like "fish food", we absolutely appreciate your opinion and your expression.

The subtle shifting of this Pu-erh is very gratifying. Each subsequent steeping seems to grow in buttery flavors without losing robustness. Be careful not to over steep....it has a tendency to deepen to fast if left in water. We were able to steep 5+ times without losing its integrity. The energetic qualities found in Pu-erhs are not lost on this varietal......we got a beautiful smooth body sensation of wholeness from drinking this tea without an edgy note. Great before QiGong. thanks for this Pu-erh!
