Hà Tây Bamboo Gift Boxes

Rishi Tea’s Organic Tea Sets feature new sustainable bamboo packaging, handwoven in a small handicraft village in Hà Tây, Vietnam. In our efforts to expand our sustainable packaging, we researched materials ranging from domestically sourced 100% recycled paperboard to renewable mulberry boxes from Thailand. During our travels to tea producing regions, we learned about the wonderful history of art and craftsmanship originating from Hà Tây.

Hà Tây is the former name of the province surrounding Hanoi city, Vietnam (Hà Tây merged with Hanoi province on August 1, 2008 but is still referred to by its former name). Hà Tây is considered the handicraft capitol of Vietnam with over 120 villages specializing in various artisan crafts. In recent years, Hà Tây has seen a significant decline in the production of handicrafts due to the increasing competition with Chinese manufactured goods. Unfortunately, this competition has forced the artisans of Hà Tây to abandon their rich art that’s been passed on from past generations in order to work in the industrial factories that have moved into the province.

Despite the increase in industrial factories, many artisan families have been able to maintain their rich cultural history by participating in projects such as the crafting of Rishi’s sustainable bamboo gift boxes.  As we’ve found with many of our sustainability efforts, good things come from good business practices. Rishi’s organic gift sets feature the wonderful artisanship of the Hà Tây province, using labels printed on 100% post-consumer waste paper, processed chlorine free, sourced and printed locally in Milwaukee, WI. As our handicraft packaging projects expand, our relationship with the Hà Tây artisans will grow and enable them the opportunity to continue their skilled crafts.
